Dentzel Carousel Restoration Introduction
Brass Ring is very proud to announce the first historically correct restoration of a carousel in the Bay area. Over the next two years you will be able to watch as the carousel is transformed from it's less-than-perfect condition into a true museum piece. Brass Ring along with the Arts Commission of San Francisco has done a complete and comprehensive evaluation of the carousel. World renowned carousel archivist and preservationist Rosa Ragan has been brought in as part of the team of experts to coordinate and document the original colors and color scheme of this historic Dentzel carousel.
Come back to this site month after month to watch as the entire restoration takes place (see index below). Brass Ring wants to bring the public into the restoration process. You will see each piece of the machine as it goes through its transformation. This site will be updated monthly with plenty of photos and explanations. Feel free to write with any questions. This carousel belongs to the public and the restoration is for you. Everything will be documented to archival specifications. This will be one of only a handful of original paint style carousels in the world. Backed with the documentation, this carousel will be as close to factory original as possible for generations to enjoy.
Brass Ring will do its best in keeping the carousel open during the entire restoration process. Unfortunately the machine was closed this winter during the restoration of the mechanics of the carousel. The building is also being restored. Brass Ring has obtained the original plans from the building manufacturer. Brass Ring will work with the building restoration contractors to insure it will receive a historically correct restoration.
Once completed this carousel will be the finest on the West Coast. The Bay area is the carousel capital of the West with a strong commitment to preserving the past. This carousel restoration will be milestone for everyone else in the world to follow.
